The best time of day for outdoor photos

FILED IN: session prep

You’ve decided you want to update your family pictures and you know you want outdoor photos. Great! That’s my favorite and I would love to capture your portraits. Reach out and tell me what you’re looking for. I’ll send you a link to a calendar with my session availability.

You’ll notice I offer sessions in the morning and in the evening and that I primarily shoot on the weekends. Why? Two reasons:

  1. I work in public relations and communications during the day. I love what I do. I also love capturing portraits. So, I do both! That means I’m primarily available for shoots in the evening and on weekends. This actually works out perfect for you, because…
  2. Early mornings (shortly after sunrise) and evenings (a few hours before sunset) is the best time to shoot outdoor portraits. It’s when the sun is lowest in the sky, which creates flattering light on you. No one wants raccoon eyes! It also gives us that sun-kissed, golden halo affect everyone loves. This is a big aspect of my work. I also find these timeframes are more feasible for most of my clients who also work during the day. I consider that a win-win-win!

Available Session Times

I’ve taken the guess work out of it and only offer sessions when you will get the best possible light. In general, sessions are available shortly after sunrise and two hours before sunset. Here’s a breakdown of session timeframes you can expect when booking a session with me.

Winter | December – March

December through mid-March, you can plan on your session taking place around 3-5 p.m. on the weekend. However, the time changes in mid-March so that will make the start time one hour later.

Spring | April – May

The sunset time drastically changes throughout the course of these two months and so our shooting times change as well. You can plan on approximately 5:30-7:30 p.m. in April and 6-8 p.m. in May.

Summer | June – August

Summer sessions are available between 6:30-8:30 p.m., two hours before sunset. This will hopefully mean that the shoot will be during the cooler part of the day as well.

Fall | September – November

The sunset time changes drastically during these three months. In September, you can plan on 5:30-7:30 p.m. until the third week and then you can plan on 5-7 p.m. until mid-October. After the first week of November, plan on a session between 3-5 p.m. and only available on weekends.
